Sorry Johns & Frank Superman...

More reaction to DC's news today... I had to vent a little more.

DC Comics' Big Announcement

Now, Before I jump to conclusions... Let me first say it's my understanding that this is basically what Marv Wolfman wanted to do after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Ok... based on this story from DC's Blog The Source, We are getting a Universe Reboot. All new number ones and 52 new titles. Not to mention 50 new costume designs all by Jim Lee. Also DC announced same day digital as the floppies. I have to stew on all this. I'm unsure my feelings, personally. There is a lot to take in. I see a lot of potential and I also see some things I don't like. I feel like we aren't getting the whole story yet. How will Flashpoint set up this story? Is it a true NEW Universe? Or? I don't know. I will say this... I'm impressed with this bold move. Really jumping out and making a DC national story. Changing things so drastically. Its very bold. I'll give them that. Making a dent in the comic universe as a whole. I promise, hell we promise that at CBXF... we will have a lot of opinions formed as this story develops. Wow.

OCW - May - Week 4: Our Own Characters

Jon was part of a small group of us that produced an anthology comic-zine we called Symmetry. We actually had a little success and it helped to forge some friendships and some hard lessons about comic making. Someday, we have the hopes of doing either a reunion podcast or some story of a "where are they now" kinda thing. But for now, here is an awesome taste of Jon Frank's contribution... reconnecting to a story he begun in Symmetry #1.  GALVAN!  Jon this looks great! Makes me kind of nostalgic for college.

OCW - May - Week 4: Our Own Characters

Awww, High School and on into College... this was Monty & My Universe. He commented that we had a "Bible" of background info on each character. And he's right. This was our general Universe of main characters. From the top Left...
"Side Kick Boy, Reign, Bender, Aurora, Hectate, Wynd, Nimbus, Dethrose, Some Robot, & Adrenaline. Wow... I loved digging these out. I may post a few more.

OCW: May 29 (Originals)

Devin Heilig AKA GEIST
GEIST

This is kind of cool for me. Some 19, 20 years ago Robb and I were sitting around and we decided to make up our own super heroes. I wrote tons of stuff on these guys, a whole bible of info on the characters, the universe and even some outlines of issues.

Cut to some 2 years ago, I started playing City of Heroes. I decided to breath some life into my high school creations. Here is Devin Heilig... AKA "Geist." A former elite US Marshal turned robo-cop. After having his mind placed into the body of a bead alien cyborg, he went rogue. He's a bad ass who is officially too old for this shit.

Comic Book Maps pt 2.

The last set of maps was such a success... I found a few more. But this time I included some other comic related cutaways and diagrams. Check these out.

Do some heroes still wear capes?!

I saw The Incredibles, again recently and the now famous "Never Wear A Cape" theme is stuck in my head. And my initial reaction was... yeah, most heroes don't wear capes anymore or at the very least... its only DC characters that wear capes, right? Wrong. I can't believe how many characters still have capes. Not just DC guys. After the jump... check out a quick list of some of my favorites.

Tracie's Pull List - Week of May 25, 2011

OCW - May - Week 4: Our Own Characters

All of us on staff have done our own characters... This week we take the opportunity to show off our own stuff. Tracie has Fight!, Monty & Robb have Phalanx or Aurora, Dr. Geektarded has Moments of Deliciousness or Soul Hammer, Jon has Galvan, Jack has The Sanguine Season. All of have done these things and many others... This week... maybe we can dust off some oldies but goodies that need a spotlight!

OCW - May - Week 3: Tomorrow Woman

Been busy lately... and Summer is hard to keep up with the OCW drawings. But I always loved this costume. Tomorrow Woman was a great character... I'd love a DC comeback with her!

Smallville: Finale Emotions

I came across this from Comicalliance.com and I just had to post this here. Talk about being fanatical about Smallville. Please watch the whole video. Its worth it to hear this man yell, "AMERICA... Home of the Brave!!" At the end. Wow... that is energy!

Comic Book Maps

Flashpoint Earth
A friend of mine (Shawn) sent me some maps that his father found online. That got me thinking, with the "World of Flashpoint" map revealed... I thought I compare some maps I found illustrating comic landmarks. Check em out!

OCW - May - Week 3: Tomorrow Woman

Created by Professor Ivo and Professor T. O. Morrow to destroy the newly formed JLA, in the late 90's. She became a member based on her telekinetic abilities which she claimed were the result of a "mutant 4 lobed brain." Actually, she was a living bomb designed to go off at a specified moment and kill the entire JLA. Eventually though, she did exactly what she was programed to do. Become a true hero. She saved the JLA at the cost of her life and earned a right to be buried in the JLA grave yard. Later she was returned to life and "dated" Hourman. To learn more about Tomorrow Woman, click here.

Contagion: Outbreak! ... is coming!

Contagion: Outbreak! Is a pop culture convention coming to Omaha this June at the Qwest Center. Years of hardwork has paid off and Omaha is finally getting a convention worthy of the region. Our very own Monty Eich and his Comedy Improv group, The Weisenheimers will be performing and has done us the honor of sharing their booth. Tracie Mauk & Robb Blum will be doing sketches, we'll be handing out flyers and stickers and hopefully record a podcast. Please support all the effort that has gone into this convention and order your tickets now. Check out Contagion's site here, and check out the Weisenheimers here. Vin Diesel interview for Iron Giant

Why am I posting this? First off... I loved the Iron Giant. Its an incredible animated movie. But what always cracked me up was how much everyone ever interviewed always described Vin Diesel as this Actor "supreme" while recording his voice over work for this animation. The bottom line is, he's a deep voiced jerk, who got to talk in burp noises and get paid. Brad Bird is a master animated film maker. But Vin Diesel needs sun glasses to look cool while belching on a voice over. Sorry... just venting.

Dream Team for the JLA

DC I have a request! A proposal! Please let me help you return the "ultimate" team back to the forefront of Super-hero Comics!

Green Lantern... Scratch Off Tickets!

Stop by any gas station or convenient store in Nebraska and while you are drinking a cheap coffee to recharge, recharge your Power Battery with a Green Lantern scratch off Ticket!

I heard this ad on the radio driving home from work, and had to see for myself. Sure enough... Hal is promoting legalized gambling! I fear that this movie is a gamble! If you'd like to see more... click here.

Robb's Comic Book Code

Robb's Comic Book Code #8

DC Comics... Please please please... Leave Todd James Rice ALONE! The character known as Obsidian... was a hero. Was... a long time ago. But every other time we see him in the DCU he's a Good Guy, He's a Bad Guy... He's a Good Guy, He's a Bad Guy. JUST LEAVE HIM A HERO AND CALL IT GOOD! Its getting old DC, real old!

(example:: Justice League of America #56!!!!)

Tracie's Pull List - Week of May 11, 2011

Man.

So.

Last week, huh?

Thor? Wow.

Free Comic Book Day? My wrist is still sore from sketching for nearly 8 hours straight. (but also wow)

Second viewing of Thor? Still wow.

I'd say I need a break from the excitement but I have a play opening this week, so no dice there. (if you're in the Omaha area, COME SEE!)

So let's just get to the comics then, shall we?

Sam Jackson's missing Avengers Movie Script - FOUND!

We just happen to stumble across a left behind script... There it was just sitting on a table at the local McDonalds. He was eating a "Royale with Cheese" and had to rush to the restroom because he spilled special sauce on his shirt. Someone needed to make sure it was kept safe... so we at CBXF grabbed it for "safe" keeping. (Email us... make us an offer) To give a taste of the special-ness that is the Up-coming Avengers Movie, we've included a sample of the climatic ending in script form. Enjoy! (And please note... it is strange how much this script reads like As Good As It Gets, starring Jack Nicholson)

Click Below to see the Movie Sample

The Odinson and Mighty Avenger Makes for an excellent film! (Spoilers)

Its Friday night of the opening week of Thor and the CBXF gang just filmed their initial thoughts in video podcast form. But to be honest... I only scratched the surface of what I wanted to say. I'm going to do my best before the excitement fades, so here goes.

Thor!!! Movie vs the Comic book

Thor opened last night and Twitter seems to be responding positively. But how does it stack up? Is it as good as the original Iron Man movie? Will it be a financial success? Did they portray this beloved character right? Well tonight many of the CBXF gang plan on seeing the God of Thunder on the wide screen, In 3D! We'll do a quick podcast review and I'm sure some written reviews, too. Tell us what you thought of the big screen adaptation! Be seeing ya soon!

Green Lantern fans, explain this to me

Really? Really? Who we kidding here?

From Green Lantern #65.

Traci corrected me, it's Emerald Warriors #8

Will this be in the movie?

Dr. G

OCW - May - Week 1: Bill

In honor of the release of the Thor movie this week, we chose an obscure Thor character. The sad part was... Bill wasn't our first. Kroda the Duelist, Geirrodur King, forger of Mjolnir... but I couldn't find photo references. So we went with Bill!

CBXF Mailbag - Friendly Fire Comments

Hey guys,

New listener/watcher here, only seen a few episodes, will start watching all the back "issues" that I can.

Was just listening to the lastest episode of Friendly Fire. I think the whole "digital age of comics/virtually everything" has good and bad points. I hate spending money for something that I don't actually have in my hand. Its great to actually have comics sitting on your shelves. I love the fact that you can theoretically have your entire collection in the palm of your hand and you can search through it very quickly etc...

Tracie's Pull List - Week of May 4, 2011

This is it! The week you've/we've all been waiting for! THOR opens in U.S. theaters Friday! Free Comic Book Day is Saturday! You'll see Comicbook Crossfire report back from both of those events sometime early next week, I'd imagine.

Meanwhile, lets not forget that tomorrow's still Wednesday and that means NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!

(which is maybe not as exciting as FREE but still pretty exciting)

(also tomorrow's Star Wars Day, everybody! Utinni!!)

OCW - Week 5 : April : Klarion the Witch Boy

I've been so busy this week, but I've not missed an OCW yet... quantity over quality... "That's my motto!"

I can say my first experience with Klarion was in Giffen's run on The Demon. I think Lobo made an appearance too. Wasn't too memorable.

Friendly Fire -Audio Podcast - Episode 4 (part2)

Tracie, Matt, and Robb continue their audio cast on Flashpoint, Fear Itself, and some politics of comicbooks and the industry. On this episode, Robb makes references a podcast called "Just Bill, the Comics Drawer".  Please check out his podcast here.

OCW - Week 5 : April : Klarion the Witch Boy

Jon Frank's Klarion
Jon's pick this week was the Jack Kirby creation, Klarion the Witch Boy. Check out his awesome OCW contribution. Looks great Jon!
