Tracie's Pull List - Week of Apr 27, 2011

We're about a week and a half away from THOR opening in the US, The Avengers started shooting yesterday and Free Comic Book Day is fast approaching.

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about comics right now.

Here's what I'm looking forward to this week:

Action Comics #900

As Robb and I have said a number of times on CBXF, Action Comics is the best Superman comic being published right now-- and there's no Superman in it. Well, that changes this week. Superman returns (ahem) and the wonderful Lex Luthor "Black Rings" storyline comes to a close. As this is the 900th issue of the premiere Superman title, we get 96 pages of story with contributions from the likes of LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof, Ryan Sook, Batman & Dark Knight screenwriter David Goyer, Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Paul Dini, "Jimmy Olsen's" RB Silva, Brian Stelfreeze, and Superman: The Motion Picture director Richard Donner.

Amazing Spider-Man #659

Part 2 of Spidey's Future Foundation adventure!

Avengers #12.1

I've seen a few off-base (or outright baseless) complains about Marvel's "Point One" initiative or the fact that Marvel isn't scaling back prices (and page counts) like DC has and to those, I'd just like to mention that this issue is 32 pages by Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch for only $2.99 AND it features a Spaceknight, for goodness sakes. (it's not Rom, but... still) That seems like the kind of jumping on point these Point One books were made for.

Brightest Day #24

Brightest Day CONCLUDES. It's been an interesting ride, let's see just what exactly we're left with here.

Captain America #617

TWO-TWO-TWO Caps for the price of ONE! Well, actually, it's for a dollar more than what the price of one would cost you, but for $3.99, we get the continuation of "Gulag" starring Bucky Barnes as Captain America. Then, in the back-up story, we have Steve Rogers: Super-Soldier as drawn by oncoming Cap & Bucky artist and beloved former artist of Thor: The Mighty Avenger, Chris Samnee. Both stories written by Cap-architect, Ed Brubaker. ...I gotta admit, seeing that Captain America movie banner at the top of the book gets me pretty excited. But if I show you anything on this blog, it's that it doesn't take much to get me excited. (MOTHER####### CHAAAIIRRRSSS)

Detective Comics #876

It's the return of the amazing Jock to art duties and the beginning of a brand new storyline in what I will call the best Batman comic being published today. Mostly because it's the only one I read. (but it is really quite good)

FF #2

So Spider-Man may not be the ONLY new member to join the FF... (it's that guy from Nip/Tuck, right?)

Flash #11

It kinda would've been nice of Flash had more of a chance to be a Flash comic and less of a springboard for a major event/crossover but gosh Francis Manapul sure draws pretty. And it will be nice to get a better idea of what Flashpoint is. Maybe.

Green Arrow #11

Really don't know what the conclusion of Brightest Day is going to mean for Green Arrow but this title needs to shape up because once the BD tie-in fades away, my love of Oliver Queen only buys you so much leeway.

Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #9

The War of the Green Lanterns continues to be maybe the most subdued Green Lantern event thus far, but I'm pretty okay with that, I think.

Incorruptible #17

I really do love the little superhero universe Mark Waid has created for himself at BOOM!.

Justice League Generation Lost #24

The CONCLUSION of CBXF's favorite bi-weekly series. (I think I can call it that, right guys?) Will there be a Justice League International after this? They better do something because this is the best Justice League comic we've had in ages.

Mighty Thor #1

While this, tragically, is NOT the return of my beloved Mighty Avenger, it is the return of Olivier Coipel to drawing a truly majestic Thor and Matt Fraction throws him against the Silver Surfer and Galactus. That's comic book gold, right there.

New Mutants #24

The Age of X marches on! I'm enjoying this story but I really have nothing more to say about it than that. [shrug]

Osborn #5 (OF 5)

This is the conclusion a comic about Norman Osborn being super evil and manipulative in a really horrible prison for really horrible people/creatures and it is written and drawn by GIRLS (GIRLS MAKE COMICS SOMETIMES, YOU GUYS) and it is SO GOOD and creepy and good.

Secret Avengers #12
Secret Avengers #12.1

We get a double-shot of Secret Avengers this week as Ed Brubaker wraps up his run on the book with the conclusion of the John Steele storyline that probably seemed out of nowhere for people who didn't read The Marvels Project. Then in the special Secret Avengers Point One, comics golden boy Nick Spencer takes over as writer and we see what the world thinks of Steve having his own team of seeeekrits.

Spider-Girl #6

Spider-Girl versus Hobgoblin! Marvel doesn't have very many (or... any?) solo female hero comics anymore so it's extra sad that this book is being canceled soon.

Uncanny X-Men #536

Gillen and Dodson revisiting Joss Whedon's Breakworld. This is good stuff.

As usual, you can check out my list and make your own at iFanboy.

  1. Tracie-
I love, love, love the pull list posts. You always list something that I overlooked. I snagged that Cap Might Avenger one shot this week and really dug it. Think I will check out the Action 900 based on some of the artists listed. Anyway, these weekly posts rock!
