Does anyone think Marvel was trying to start a trend of heroes in kitbash costumes in the 80's? I mean we have Denny here and of course there was Jubilee's original costume. Also who can forget the Amazing Bag-Man... Oh Marvel...
On a whole thought I think the costume designs of the late 70's to the mid 80's are probably some of the strongest in the industry. Not only because of Dave Cockrum and the influence he had on Marvel and DC but also the emergence of the British talent especially Alan Davis (his Captain Britain redesign is one of my favorite designs ever), who for my money is the best working artist today. Yet Marvel only has him doing covers...
Alan Davis is a hero of mine. His work on Excalibur and X-Men were beautiful. But my favorite was his "elseworlds" JLA The Nail. (The sequel was good too, but not as strong as the original)
Alan Davis is doing the Avengers mini series, Avenger's Prime. I haven't been collecting it, but I plan to get the trade paperback.
And I do agree about Cockrum really molding the way artists do costumes, even today. His design for Nightcrawler is legendary.
Well to be honest I see Avengers Prime as a total waste of time for him, it is totally pointless and unnecessary story even more so than some of Bendis's other Avengers stories. Seriously no cares about the Hood, you had a chance to make him into something and you wasted it, please just stop.
Also people seem to forget that Cockrum was the one to redesign the Legion, which unless I am mistaken no one has really messed with since. Also for a bit of fun here is some art from a Legion spin-off Cockrum proposed back in the day: http://www.uncannyxmen.net/db/article/showquestion.asp?faq=4&fldAuto=315 Oh what come have been.
I just got a plug-in for flatting that's worked great for this FIGHT! page I'm doing. I think/hope it's making me way faster. At least on the flatting end.

ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it... yeah. Eventually John F. Walker put on the "Captain" outfit, too.

This is so great, Robb, and I totally love your Daredevil. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks... :) And I implemented some of your coloring tips.
