Tracie & Robb Emailed Comic Banter: First Class Trailer
Robb: Ya see the X-men First Class trailer?
I'm interested. Looks overall good... But I thought they were "distancing" themselves from the original 3 Xmovies. (And Wolverine...Is that considered same universe?) This is looking less like a re-boot and more like a pre-quel. Maybe they will treat this more like a ret-con of their own past continuity. Again, Marvel is whooping DC's keester in all this. Even if they put out crap or gold, Marvel knows how to make the public want to buy/see it.
I think the shot of Magneto's helmet looked waay cool.
Tracie: The First Class trailer is curious. I'm cautiously optimistic but Last Stand and Wolverine Origins both had cool trailers and sucked balls.
It's totally meant to be the same universe. That's the only reason they aren't using Cyclops, Jean, or ANYONE RECOGNIZABLE in it, because it's meant to take place in the 60's. It's a period superhero film. Which is just crazy enough to work, maybe. (and yes Wolverine is
considered the same universe... though I guess they're ignoring the fact that they already had a young Emma Frost in that since there was barely any point to her)
It's not a retcon the way the new Spider-Man will be. It's even being produced by Bryan Singer. He almost directed it but had other commitments. Still, producing it at least puts his hands in it which is something Last Stand and Origins didn't have.
And I'm pretty delighted to see them actually wearing blue and gold rather than black leather.
The choice of mutants they're putting on the team is bizarre as hell, though, but I guess I dunno what you're meant to do when you want to place a prequel in the 60's and you made most of your previous cast members in their teens through their early/mid 30's.
They get to have Beast on the team because Kelsey Grammer played him and that makes him old enough to be on the team.
They're replacing Cyclops with Havok and making him the other brother rather than younger. Which... I'm actually kind of excited to see Havok in the movie.
They're also using Angel (not Warren Worthington, but the chick with fly wings that Morrison created), Darwyn (who I think was a Brubaker creation but is currently a member of X-Factor), Banshee and freaking Azazel, Nightcrawler's dad--one of the WORST IDEAS IN X-MEN HISTORY. They decided that Nightcrawler's dad should be an ACTUAL DEMON FROM HELL.
I'm sure in the movie they'll just call him a regular ol mutant... but why oh why did they feel like they needed a scary red dude who had Kurt's powers? There's other teleporting mutants with less stupid backgrounds.
Are we going to see him and young Mystique hook up and leave baby Nightcrawler in a basket for the gypsies? What's the point of that? Are moviegoers going to care about the convoluted background of a character they saw in X2 and never again?
And yes, DC reeeeally needs Green Lantern to be a hit because they are just lagging behind. The script reviews for the Wonder Woman TV show are terrible. The Superman reboot is still an unknown quantity. (I'm optimistic but I'm an easy sell... they need to do more than that)
Nolan's doing his final Batman movie and then they're really going to have nothing to fall back on if these properties don't bring their A-game.
Robb: I'll admit it, I didn't know Singer was involved. That gives me much hope.
And the trailer did look interesting. Maybe we will see Cable shift in with a baby attached to his chest for one quick scene then shift right out.
Ooo on that note, maybe we'll see Logan fighting alongside Steve Rogers in The First Avenger. (I know not with the X-verse in bed with 20th Century Fox and Captain A in the Paramount camp, but it'd be a cool quick scene to have Hugh Jackman running along side of Chris Evans in WWII soldier attire for a quick cameo)
Tracie: That's the sort of thing I'd love if Marvel had all of their licenses under one roof.
But we did get that in the Avengers cartoon so that makes me plenty happy.
And while there's no way in hell we'll get Jackman's Logan to cameo in Cap, it's still super cool seeing Dum Dum Dugan fighting alongside him in the teaser. Mustache, bowler hat and all.
Now I wonder if they're planning to make Nick Fury super old or not. Whether we'll see Jackson as a Howling Commando or if they'll just make it an ancestor. Or no Fury at all. (at least until the modern day scene[s])
But holy heck, having Maria Hill and frickin' Quasar (sort of) makes it feel like a real danged Marvel Universe. (minus the FF, Spidey and any and all mutants... *sigh*)
