(Spoiler-y)During Geoff Jones run on Action comics, He wrote a Story Arc called: Superman: Brainiac. This was an intense and moving story that introduced the bottle city of Kandor and ending the life of Pa Kent. At NYCC oit has been revealed this story will beocme DC next animated movie. YES! He just deserves better. Superman and his future in the DC 52

Grant is leaving the Man of Steel. More specifically, the title Action Comics. And this makes me sad. He got the ball rolling. He kicked off a "new 52" Superman that is definitely different. But he’s leaving and I’m sad... and well... scared. Lack of communication and short-sightedness from DC frightens me. I say this because Yes, Morrison’s run on Action has been darn near pitch perfect. But the connection to the Man of Steel’s other title, “Superman” has been none! Even during the creation, interviews have revealed that George Perez knew nothing of what Grant was planning. So we have two different takes on a character “during a re-boot”?  Where was the symmetry? The title Superman is just poor. From art, to story, to use of villains. This is your flag ship character. And even though I am loving what Grant has done in Action, it doesn’t feel like a “larger” story arc. I hope I’m wrong. Morrison has a way of weaving in large/deep meaning tale, over vastly long periods of story telling. (ie. Black Glove, Final Crisis, Batman RIP) But right now, to me it feels like Grant just had an interesting take on Superman and told a cool story and really doesn’t have a larger plan. I find this future unacceptable. Because I don’t know what DC will do when Grant leaves.

Happy Birthday, Superman!!!

For some, Superman's birthday is considered February 29th. This was established in the Silver Age when editor Julie Schwartz declared that Superman’s birthday was on Leap Day in a number of letter pages. Also it was reiterated in Superman Annual #11.

Officially, the character turns 74 this summer.

For me, traditionally I'd hit every local comic store in the area on this day.  Alas this year, circumstances have prevented me from this. But I plan to watch the Justice League: Doom DVD movie and hitting a store or two on my way home. But, if you truly like what Superman represents and stands for... Do something honorable and decent. Help someone out. Hold a door for someone. Hide your road rage. Whatever. But in all honesty, try to be a better person, be a Superman. Happy Birthday Kal-el.

The Death and Return of Superman

As someone who's actually had a co-worker come up to me and ask me to explain The Death of Superman to them, it's nice that I can now just point them to this:



I've seen this linked several places online but to be fair, it wasn't until my cousin Scott placed it on my Facebook wall that I finally sat down and watched it.

It's... it's pretty accurate. Though--and I'm sure I can speak for him in this--Robb and I disagree in his initial statements about Superman and there being nothing special about him. And I can say that as someone who spent most of her life in the "Superman is boring" camp.

But that's all beside the point. The point I actually wanted to bring up, besides the fact that this is a fantastic and hilarious and accurate-ish video, is that this video was created by Max Landis, son of John Landis, and screenwriter of the new film, CHRONICLE, that brought in a lot of strong reviews this past weekend.

I haven't seen Chronicle yet--though I'd very much like to--but I understand that the director of the film, Josh Trank, has been rumored to be the frontrunner for the Fantastic Four reboot. Now, if those reviews and this wonderful Superman recap are any indication, I'd like to say that maybe this kid aught to reteam with Josh if that really comes to be. He knows his stuff and, even better, he delivers it in a really charming, fun way. (and lord, those celebrity cameos)

I think we need another Comicbook Crossfire Goes To The Movies weekend and hit up some Chronicle. Maybe we could double-feature it with Phantom Menace 3D. (consider it a cleanser)

OCW - New 52 Superman

 

So a few weeks ago, I posted the "OCW" (Obscure Character of the Week) as the New Superman. Well I always intended to draw him, but all of us at CBXF are pretty busy. I've been posting sketches as I've gone. Then, I computer colored it. And now I can finally say I finished this today. I took inspiration from the classic "Neal Adams" Superman breaking Kryptonite Chains pose. (See image below) And I spent sometime trying to copy the colors and text to put my own spin on this cover. I'll say this... Some artist have drawn the new costume very well, others not so much. But you can count me as one who'd prefer to draw the "Pre-Crisis" costume over this one. The piping and belt are not easy and I find it hard to make this look like armor vs. making it look like spandex. All in all, it is still a cool design and I'm not one to stand in way of progress. I just wish the new Superman artists good luck in rendering all that detail.  

Man of Steel Fanny Pack? Nope!

Tracie listened to a previous Friendly Fire podcast and pulled ONE LINE out of it to disagree with. Of all the dumb, horrible things I normally say. She chose this one line to criticize. Well I'm here to stand by my statement. "EVERYONE LOOKS COOL IN A POUCH BELT." Even Superman. Yes, even Superman. Sorry Tracie. We don't disagree often. But, Everyone looks better in pouches!

SDCC - Home-Con 2011

Alas, whilst I did not attend the San Diego Comic-Con this year (because it is an exhausting madhouse and also I'm lazy) I did participate in the much more relaxing and casual and--well, I'd say "clothes optional" but, well... You can almost get away with anything at Comic-Con. Except for Electrical Tape Suspenders Girl. They sent her away one year. BUT ANYWAY. Where was I? HOME-CON.

I attended Home-Con. Which consisted of me sitting in front of my computer eating microwaved leftovers and drinking Canada Dry while following along with live-blogs and YouTube clips and RSS feeds beamed to me from the con floor. Catching all the news and panels and cosplay photos I can possibly stand to shove into my eyes and brain.

It looked like people had a good time. All those tens of thousands of people. And nobody got stabbed with a pen, did they? Did The Lizard push you?

What stood out to me, this year, from what I have seen on the Internet, while cosplaying as Tracie In The Clothes She Slept In?

The need to say "Good-Bye"

I just learned today, (Click this link to see the whole story) just how much of Superman will be changing and evolving in the DCnU, September "Relaunch". And it has made me a little sad.

Back when all these changes were announced, it came as no surprise to me that they were going to end the Lois and Clark Marriage. That seemed logical. We want a young "Bachelor" Superman. I figured we'd still have some conflict / flirting / sexual tension with Lois that would develop over time.. but I was sure they wouldn't be married.

What I didn't expect was to lose both the Kents.

Luthor proves Superman is NOT an American

After weeks of digging and speculation, the 2012 Presidential hopeful, Lex Luthor finally found the evidence to prove Superman's "Alien" citizenship. Superman, who recently denounced his American citizenship, could not be contacted for comment. But many joggers who witnessed his "stroll" along America's Highways quoted Superman as saying, "Um... no... really... I'm from Kansas... I mean... Um... Metropolis... Crap... nevermind".

Many people interviewed were confused by Superman's "denouncing the American way", but we were able to speak with a random passerby. Widowed Martha Kent spoke about her deceased husband and his fondness for Superman. "I know Superman has his reasons, but my Jonathan always knew him to have a good kind heart. And I suspect he still loves baseball and apple pie... lets see what Clar... er Superman has to say in the weeks to come.", said Martha.

Henry Cavill is the new Superman!

The "Man of Steel" has been cast for Zach Snyder's up coming Superman movie, and I'm very happy. Not as happy if they cast Brandon Routh... but I understand, they really needed to distance themselves from the previous movie.

Henry is damn near perfect, and here's why. He's an incredible actor on Showtime's The Tudors. He's really great as Charles Brandon in Season 3, as he leads English troops to quell a religious uprising in the north. He is torn between his loyalty to the King and his own moral compass. And his eyes showing compassion could be very Superman-esque. (Even though Brandon later showed little mercy, but eh different characters).

But the best reason I like Cavill as Superman is they stayed with an unknown! I feel this is paramount because I don't want to be looking at someone and thinking that's Robert Redford dressed as Superman, that's Jon Ham dressed as Superman. That why I liked Routh... he felt like Superman. And I feel really really good about Cavill. (I hope I'm right... and lets not have any more real estate crimes this time.)
