I just finished watching this episode and I had a few thoughts to share on digital comics. Frankly price isn't going be a big deal, in time Apple will set an industry standard price (probably at the behest of Disney) for comics. I can see this coming to pass by the time the Avengers movie hits theaters, along with a massive upswing in same day digital releases.
Now my issue with digital downloads in general is that you aren't purchasing a product, you are purchasing access to a program. While there a lot of good things about this there is a major downside, you have no rights in concern to what you have purchased. This has come up before with regards to things such as e-books, but this is going be a problem with digital comics too.
Remember a few months ago when there was that big blow-up about Captain American and the teabagging sign, and Marvel acting all apologetic and changing the offending item in future reprintings. A very real possibility is that in future instances Marvel could directly adjust your already purchased downloads. I know this seems like a mild matter, but it opens the door to more serious forms of censorship. Hell even whole issues could get deleted if enough pressure was put on the publisher, and so long as they refund your money you have no right to complain. This is why physical media is better since after you purchases it no one has any right to take it away from you. And until issues such as these are dealt with digital comics are in my eyes a novelty.
First off... thanks for watching! Glad someone besides the 4-5 of us who "star" on it... and our parents.
2nd... wow, thats a point I never thought of. I really feel like the "digital' comic world is just starting. To use a sports metaphor, Online comics are only at the bottom of the 1st inning. I know as a whole, I'm curious about the medium going digital. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted at recent conventions to buy the "bootleg" every DC comic on DVD since the "Crisis". How cool would it be to have all that art and story all in one place.
But your point makes me fear the "digital" movie copies i get with my dvds could fall into the same vein. Could we see censorship and deletion of "finished" movies and comics and other online entities over time? Kind of scary.
But I'm bairly understanding how digital music has moved from bying cds... I dont want to see that happen to comic shops. (Among other issues I have with going digital.)
You've given me something new to think about, and I'm sure well cover this subject more in the future. Thanks again for your opinion.
